In the last blog post we looked at HIPAA, Precision Medicine and others but buzzwords are so common in health tech that we couldn’t even address the top buzzwords in one post alone! So, here is part 2 of the top health tech buzzwords.
“Digital health experience platforms” grows out of ‘digital experiences’ and ‘platforms’, which are two of the top buzzwords in tech over the last few years. Because this term is literally made up of three different buzzwords, it can be tricky to nail down a definition!
The idea behind this buzzword is to change the way the patients interact with and understand their health data and treatment. Generally, they take the form of an online portal where the patient logs in and is guided through the treatment or data with a goal of helping them understand it better. The platform element comes in with the analytics and back-end management of the tool. I would say that digital health experience platforms are more of a buzzword, and the best companies in those spaces focus more on the value of the platforms for patients, not on the term.
With the shift to digital accelerating following the COVID-19 pandemic, we can be forgiven for looking at any term with ‘digital’ in it as a buzzword. Digital health management shouldn’t really be a buzzword. At its heart, it is about allowing patients and providers to securely access data and ‘manage it’. However, some analysts have gone overboard to make this into a buzzword saying it will ‘shake up business as usual’. The truth is that digital health management tools are secure, tried and true solutions that really help providers and patients every day.
In part one of this post, I mentioned how medicine can overwhelm us with buzzwords. Genomics is an example of a medical term that has jumped from medicine to health tech. Genomics is a field of medical study with the focus on the study of how medicine could use individual genes to craft personalized gene therapies for patients. Genomics is a truly exciting area of research and one that many health tech companies are involved with.
In conclusion, buzzwords truly dominate the health tech space and I struggled keeping this to three posts. To read the last of our three part series on health tech buzzwords, click here.
